Become a Better Leader Through Experience
Do you want to become a better leader? What is the most effective and efficient way to take your leadership to the next level?
One word, experience. There is no way around it. To grow as a leader you need to learn from experience. There are two ways to do this.
Learn from your own experience
What is the best way to learn about leadership?
Whether you aspire to be a leader, or you are more seasoned, the best way to develop your leadership is to lead.
Almost fourteen years ago, I received my first big chance to lead. I had just finished a two year training program and landed a new opportunity. I did not really know what I was doing, but I worked hard.
Over the next three years, I gained experience in creating and casting vision, creating and implementing a strategy, time management, developing leaders, communication, marketing and more. If I would not have taken that opportunity to lead, I would never have learned and experienced all that I did.
Learn from the experience of others
Are you already leading in some capacity?
If you want to become a better leader, take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the experience of other leaders. Books are a great way to make this happen.
The fact that you can spend a week or two and learn what took the author years, maybe even decades to learn, is amazing. By going online, to a bookstore or to your local library you can pick up a book and learn directly from world-class leaders in a variety of fields.
If you want to grow as a leader and you are not currently in any type of leadership role, I challenge you to find one. Or, you can always create one. Start a book club that meets locally or online. Find some people that you have a common interest with and create a local or online group around that interest.
If you want to develop as a leader and you are already leading in some way, I challenge you to find a good book that peeks your interest and start reading. I use Audible.com to buy audio books and listen to them in my car or during other down-times throughout my day. Audible has a great iPhone app, and if you don’t have an iPhone, they have other options.
If you truly desire to be a better leader, you can. Make the time regularly to lead in some way and/or read good books on topics relevant to your leadership journey.
